On March 14-18, 2016, a total of 76 Post Doc fellows, third-year PhD students and prominent national and international speakers attended the Winter School on Diabetes and Metabolism with focus on different aspects of epidemiology and diabetes ranging from basic to clinical science.
THE FOLLOWING TOPICS WITHIN EPIDEMIOLOGY AND DIABETES WERE COVERED
The overall sessions of the programme included: Epidemiology of diabetes; Diabetes subtypes; Gestational diabetes; Diabetic complications; Lipids; Inflammation; Aging; Pipeline therapies; Technology; Beta-cells, Gut microbiota & Obesity; Autophagia & Diabetes research - where are we heading?
MEET THE PROFESSOR
The above mentioned sessions featuring lectures by prominent researchers from both Denmark and abroad were supplemented by meet-the-professor sessions dedicated to give the participants a chance to discuss their research or career paths with an experienced researcher.
INFORMAL LATE AFTERNOON POSTER SESSIONS
The first three late afternoons were scheduled to one-minute poster presentations followed by an informal poster session that generated a lot of questions and strengthened networking.
FREE TIME ACTIVITIES
The excellent weather allowed the participants to enjoy the surrounding nature and outdoor sports activities during the breaks - the hotel resort had everything you could possibly think of in one place including 3 restaurants, indoor and outdoor swimming pools, paddle tennis, tennis, beach volley, a gym, a spa and even a hair dresser.
DRESS TO IMPRESS
Thursday night a dress-to-impress gala dinner was held, and despite the fact that a majority of the participants were leaving for Denmark the next morning at 4:30 a.m. people seemed to enjoy themselves - toasts were made, drinks were drunk and a DJ got people out on the dance floor. Rumours even said that a China vs. Denmark swimming battle took place, but whether or not this is actually true remains unsaid.
WE LOOK FORWARD TO REPEATING THE SUCCESS AGAIN NEXT YEAR
The Danish Diabetes Academy secretariat thanks all invited speakers for sharing their knowledge and research and all Post Docs and PhD students for raising relevant questions, taking part in discussions and presenting their work - you all took part in making the Winter School a success, which we look forward to repeating again next year!
