On September 6-9, 2016, a total of 82 PhD students, prominent national and international speakers and guests attended the Summer School on Diabetes and Metabolism held at Sinatur Hotel Gl. Avernæs in Nyborg.
THE FOLLOWING TOPICS WITHIN DIABETES AND METABOLISM WERE COVERED
The overall sessions of the programme included: Fetal programming, Molecular and clinical aspects of gastric bypass surgery, Systemic and integrative metabolism, Biology of islets and Functional genomics of diabetes and obesity.
Additionally, the PhD students could choose to attend two out of six workshops and 10 of the PhD students were selected to give an oral presentation about their research.
AFTERNOON WITH A BRAIN
The invited speakers gladly accepted to participate in the so-called 'Afternoon with a brain' session, the aim of which was to give the PhD students the opportunity to have an informal talk with an experienced researcher about their career paths and research experience.
INFORMAL PRE-DINNER POSTER SESSIONS
This year we decided to try out another poster session format than previously employed. In stead of doing later after dinner poster sessions where the PhD students had 5 minutes to present their poster in small groups, we held pre-dinner poster sessions initiated by 1-minute teaser presentations in plenum followed by an open informal poster session.
FREE TIME ACTIVITIES
The excellent weather allowed the participants to enjoy the surrounding nature and outdoor sports activities during the breaks such as kayaking, frisbee, golf, bicycle riding.
THANKS FOR YOUR PARTICIPATION
The Danish Diabetes Academy Education Committee thanks all invited speakers for sharing their knowledge and research and all PhD students for raising relevant questions, taking part in discussions and presenting their work - you all took part in making the Summer School a success, which we look forward to repeating again next year.
